Version 0.7.8

Updates now install by themselves • Quitting always asks about unsaved changes • Saves finish offline with an iCloud library

0.7.8 · macOS

New Features

  • Updates install by themselves (macOS): SuperCards checks for a new version when it opens and every 4 hours while it stays open. With Install updates automatically on (the default, in App Settings), it downloads and installs the update in the background while you work, and the new version starts the next time SuperCards opens. A notice says when it’s ready, with Restart Now to switch right away. With the setting off, SuperCards still tells you when an update is available and installs it only when you click Install and Restart. It never asks for a password on its own. Keeping SuperCards up to date has the details. This update installs the old way, with a click; updates after it install by themselves

Bug Fixes

  • Every way of quitting asks about unsaved changes (macOS): ⌘Q, the Dock’s Quit, the menu bar icon’s Quit, Activity Monitor, logging out or shutting down, and Restart to Update could all close SuperCards without a word while the Card Editor had unsaved changes. A minimized Card Editor was skipped even by the app’s own Quit, and answering the question after more than 30 seconds left the app open. Every route now brings the Card Editor forward and asks first, and a log out or shut down waits for your answer
  • Text you’re typing is kept (macOS): Text typed into a text box was lost without a question if you quit or closed the Card Editor while the cursor was still in the box. The card now shows as edited from the first keystroke, closing or quitting asks first, and ⌘S saves with the cursor still in the box (it did nothing before). Opening a card from another deck while typing asks too
  • Saves finish offline (macOS): With your library in iCloud and no connection, saving, deleting, duplicating or moving a card could fail with an error when the deck’s own files were in iCloud only. These now finish. The deck’s card count stays right, so a deck you fill while offline shows up on your iPhone with the right count once you’re back online. Deck title, color and background changes work offline too
  • Deck thumbnails no longer disappear (macOS): A save made while a deck’s card order was out of reach could clear that deck’s thumbnails in the Library
  • Deleting the open card keeps your edits (macOS): Deleting the card open in the Card Editor, from the editor or from Card Controls, opened the next card as last saved, losing any unsaved edits you had made to it. The next card now opens with its edits
  • A click doesn’t mark a card edited (macOS): A single click on a text box, an image or one of their handles marked the card as edited. A box or image now moves or resizes only once you drag it
  • No question about an empty card (macOS): Opening a card from another deck while a new, untouched card was open asked about unsaved changes. The untouched card is now discarded without a question, as closing the Card Editor already did
  • Brain Dump icon in dark mode (macOS): The Brain Dump icon in the Move menu is now visible in dark mode

Improvements

  • A clear message when iCloud can’t be reached (macOS): If your library is in iCloud and a deck’s files can’t be fetched at launch, the window says “Can’t connect with iCloud. Opening your library…” after a few seconds, instead of waiting without a word
  • Check for Updates says when it can’t connect (macOS): Before, a check that couldn’t reach the internet looked the same as being up to date

Technical Updates

  • Every way of quitting or restarting goes through one quit path in the app’s backend
  • Update checks and installs are handled by the backend alone. The app’s windows no longer have permission to run the updater or restart the app themselves
  • The update check downloads a small file from GitHub, where SuperCards releases are published. GitHub sees your Mac’s IP address, as with any download; nothing is sent to us
  • The app keeps each deck’s deck.json in its records on your Mac, so it can update a deck’s count and settings without opening the file. The first launch of this version reads every deck’s file once to rebuild those records
  • A change finishes once the cards’ own files are written; the deck’s order, count and thumbnails follow
