Keeping SuperCards up to date
SuperCards for Mac keeps itself up to date. It checks for new versions on its own, installs them while you work, and switches over the next time it starts. There's nothing to download and nothing to interrupt.
How updates work
- Checking — SuperCards checks for a new version when it opens, and every 4 hours while it stays open.
- Installing — when it finds one, it downloads and installs it in the background. The version you're using keeps running.
- Taking effect — the new version starts the next time SuperCards opens. To switch right away, click Restart Now in the notice. If the Card Editor has unsaved changes, SuperCards asks about them first.
Until you restart, a blue dot on the SuperCards logo at the top of the sidebar shows that an update is ready, and the logo's menu offers Restart to Update.
Every update is signed. SuperCards checks the signature before installing and never installs an update that fails the check.
In SuperCards 0.7.7 and earlier, updates install only when you click Restart to Update.
Turning automatic updates off
Open Settings → App Settings and switch off Install updates automatically in the General section. SuperCards keeps checking and still tells you when a new version is available, but nothing installs until you click Install and Restart in the notice, or Restart to Update in the logo's menu.Checking for updates yourself
Click the SuperCards logo at the top of the sidebar and choose Check for Updates. You'll find the same option in the More menu of the menu bar dropdown, and as the Check Updates button in Settings. You can also download the latest version at any time and drag it into your Applications folder to replace the one you have.
When an update needs your help
SuperCards installs in the background only when it can replace itself without asking for a password. When it can't, it waits for your click, even with automatic updates on, and tells you what's in the way:- "Replacing SuperCards needs an administrator's password." The folder SuperCards is in belongs to another account on this Mac. Click Install and Restart and enter an administrator's name and password when macOS asks, or ask an administrator to install the update.
- "SuperCards can't update itself where it is." You're probably running SuperCards straight from the disk image you downloaded. Drag it into your Applications folder, eject the disk image, and open SuperCards from Applications.
- "Couldn't check for updates" or "The update couldn't be downloaded." SuperCards couldn't reach the internet. Check your connection and try again; automatic checks pick up again on their own once you're back online.
